Gas Lines and what to do in-case of emergency
Gas Lines can be extremely dangerous if left in disrepair. thats why it is important to know where your shut off is and how to use it. Every gas meter in our area is equipped with a shut off valve. Know where it is, know what it looks like, and know how to use it.
If you smell gas:
• Leave the area immediately. Get everyone out of the home or building.
• Do not turn lights or appliances on or off. Electrical switches can create a spark.
• Avoid using phones or electronics inside the building.
• Shut off the gas supply if it is safe to do so using the valve at the gas meter.
• Call your gas provider or emergency services once you are safely outside and away from the building.
• Contact a licensed plumber to inspect and repair the gas line before turning the gas back on.
Steps to shut your gas off
Below is a list of steps to take in case you smell gas
1. Evacuate the building
Smelling gas is the first sign you have an emergency. Get everyone out of the house or building and moved to a safe location.
2. Shut the gas off to the home
1. Locate the gas meter
Your gas meter is usually located outside your home along an exterior wall, near the front or side of the property.
2. Find the shutoff valve
Look for a small rectangular valve located on the pipe coming out of the gas meter. When the valve is parallel with the pipe, the gas is on.
3. Use a wrench to turn the valve
Using an adjustable wrench or gas shutoff tool, turn the valve one-quarter turn (90 degrees) until it is perpendicular to the pipe.
4. Confirm the gas is off
When the valve is turned so it crosses the pipe, the gas supply to your home is shut off.
3. Call Gas Provider and Your Plumber
Call you local gas provider and then a plumber. Your gas provider will instruct you to call a plumber and wont release the gas until safe to do so. Call Saturn Plumbing to fix your gas leaks and get your home back to being safe and habitable.
